Meet new people. Have fun. Enjoy sailing.
Our Program
Sheboygan's Sea Scout Ship 50 meets every Monday and Thursday evening through the summer months to conduct sailing and racing lessons. Additional boat use and activities occur whenever adult leaders and coaches become available. Many leaders and students are meeting every Saturday morning this winter building a wooden kayak using the epoxy stitch and glue method of construction.
Activities are organized into four main categories:
Sailing Lessons
Lessons are taught by experienced adult leaders through out the summer. No experience is required other than the ability to swim. Sailing skills are taught using an experiential method. Adult coaches provide hands on experience using larger boats the first several outings as we get on the water immediately. Students quickly transition to the fleet of five 13' Flying Juniors to maximize their time on the helm. Right from the beginning students are shown how to rig and launch their boats, and are responsible for the condition of boats and equipment.
Racing
Racing occurs on Thursday evenings when enough students have the required experience to participate. The fleet of five 13' Flying Juniors is perfect for this activity since the Flying Junior sailboat is one of the oldest and most popular boats used in High School and Collegiate racing nationally. High Schools can form their own teams or individual sailors are matched with others to form teams. Everyone participates. Experienced adults continually coach racing rules and tactics. Developing skills are frequently rewarded with invitations to crew on yacht club member boats in club races. Learn more...
Crew Placement
Placement is not guaranteed but there is a long tradition that young people demonstrating skill and love of the sport are in demand for crew positions on larger club member boats. The Sheboygan Yacht Club conducts races on Tuesday evenings in 19' Lightning one design sailboats that use a crew of three. Wednesday evening is larger keel boat racing in boats 24 to 70 foot long using crews of four to 15 people each. The club also conducts racing on many weekends. Owners often have need for an extra hand. There are often many opportunities to help conduct and watch the races on committee boats.
Kayaking
Kayaking is a great way to get on the water regardless of wind conditions. Our fleet includes four plastic Tsunami kayaks by Wilderness Systems, a 17' varnished wooden Chesapeake model we built in 2007, and the 17' wood Shearwater model under construction winter 2009. Excursions are most often exploring up the river but the marina and lake shore are also interesting when weather permits. Kayaks can be used any time a coach is present and some students join just for kayaking. Most often students start by kayaking and then slowly get hooked on sailing.
